First 2013 Corvette 427 Convertible Sold. It’s a Chevy tradition to auction off the first of any new edition for a charitable cause, and the new 427 Convertible is no different. The first 2013 Corvette 427 Convertible Collector Edition – the fastest and most capable convertible in Corvette’s history – sold for $600,000 in the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale collector car auction Saturday.
The Corvette 427 Convertible, which arrives at U.S. Chevrolet dealers this summer, blends elements of the Z06 and ZR1 models. The Vehicle Identification Number ending in 001 was sold in the auction.
Its heart is the 427-cubic-inch (7.0L) LS7 engine from the Corvette Z06. Rated at 505 horsepower (377 kW) and 470 lb.-ft. of torque (637 Nm), it is the most powerful engine ever installed in a production Corvette convertible – and, like the Z06, the 427 Convertible is only available with a six-speed manual transmission.
Early 427-powered Corvettes, particularly convertibles, offered from 1966 to 1969 are some of the most-coveted and collectable Corvettes ever produced.
Chevrolet and Hendrick Motorsports teamed up for the auction, with four-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Champion Jeff Gordon and team owner Rick Hendrick, to raise a total of $700,000 for the AARP’s Drive to End Hunger food relief program.
The Drive to End Hunger is part of a multi-year sponsorship for Gordon’s No. 24 Chevrolet. It calls on racing fans, corporations and charitable organizations to raise money, build awareness, and engage Americans who face the threat of hunger.

Even with a base price of about $110,000, the 2011 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 is a performance bargain. Its 638 hp puts it right up there with some serious European hardware costing considerably more. Appropriately, the ZR1 is also loaded with trick high-performance technology such as dry-sump lubrication, magnetic ride control, launch control and ceramic brakes. The question is, what does one do with all of this rarefied performance potential?
On cold tires, the grip goes away halfway through first gear and the rear wheels spin with real enthusiasm. Add some heat to the rubber, and you'll get further up the dial before the same thing happens. I once had the wheels break loose fairly high up the tach in second, and the car started a fast wiggle similar to what you see F1 cars doing in the wet. Presumably because both rear wheels were spinning at the same speed, the active handling system chose to ignore it. Yes, we should have used the launch control.
Whichever way you look at it, this is a seriously fast car. Pull the trigger on this sucker, and you'd better have some space around you, because things start happening at a rate quite unlike anything most people have ever experienced. This essentially makes the ZR1 a track car. Anyone planning only to commute and drive socially in a ZR1 is just posing. We believe frequent track days are called for here.
This is a little ironic, because the Corvette is now surprisingly civil in everyday driving situations. The dual-range suspension settings allow tolerably compliant responses over bumps and ridges, the drivetrain is adequately isolated, and the tight composite body refrains from creaking. Moreover, the clutch is easy to use and the shifter is fluid and accurate. In terms of overall refinement, the Vette has come a long way.
In ZR1 trim, the car's interior goes some way to justify the steep price tag. The leather-covered seats, shifter and steering wheel provide a lush interface between driver and car, while a comprehensive list of luxury equipment items stud the internal landscape. But under all of that the archetypal American sports car remains, with a brawny, big engine and rear-wheel drive, now tuned and honed to a fast Nürburgring-lapping balance.
A good driver will extract remarkable virtuosity from the ZR1--just take a look at the YouTube Nordschleife lap--but most of the likely owners will barely scratch the surface. That's their privilege. The rest of us are simply grateful for the ride.

Commensurate with the ZR1's engine output is the braking system, headlined by Brembo carbon-ceramic brake rotors. Found on only a few exotics and more expensive supercars, carbon-ceramic brake rotors are made of a carbon-fiber-reinforced ceramic silicon carbide material. The advantages of these rotors are low mass and resistance to wear and heat. In fact, the rotors should never show corrosion or require replacement for the life of the vehicle, when used in normal driving.
The vented and cross-drilled rotors on the ZR1 measure 15.5 inches (394 mm) in diameter in the front and 15 inches (380 mm) in diameter in the rear – making them among the largest carbon-ceramic rotors available on any production vehicle.
Clamping down on the high-tech rotors are six-piston front calipers and four-piston rear calipers, each painted a ZR1-exclusive blue. The brakes are visible through the ZR1's exclusive wheels: 20-spoke alloy rims that measure 19 x 10 inches in diameter in the front and 20 x 12 inches in the rear. A Sterling Silver paint finish is standard; chrome and Competition Gray versions are optional. The wheels are wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 2 tires developed specifically for the ZR1, measuring P285/30ZR19 in front and P335/25ZR20 in the rear.

The Corvette ZR1 may be the bees' knees, but there's certainly a lot to be said about the mid-range Z06. For 2012, the Z06 gets a host of updates, and in order to prove the car's performance prowess, Corvette engineer Jim Mero took a brand new Z06 fitted with the Z07 chassis package to Germany's Nürburgring, only to find out that it's capable of ripping off a 7:22.68 lap time.

We've seen plenty of coachbuilt
Chevrolet Corvettes – both old and new – coming out of Italy. Now ze Germans apparently want to get in on the action, and this is the design with which they aim to do it.
Called SC-1, it's the product-in-the-making from Munich-based upstart Endora Cars. The design is decidedly neo-retro, blending styling elements from American and European cars of the '50s, '60s and early '70s with modern touches like LED foglights, Chevy taillights and a rear diffuser.
Like the Vette on which it's based, Endora plans on offering the SC-1 in three states of tune: with the base Corvette's 6.3-liter LS3 V8 with 437 horsepower, the Z06's 7.0-liter LS7 V8 with 512 hp and the ZR1's supercharged LS9 V8 with 647 hp. GM's six-speed manual transmission and active suspension are slated to be ported over as well, with a paddle-shift six-speed auto offered only on the base model.

ZR1 is powered by a supercharged 6.2 liter V8 with 638bhp (476 kW) at 5900RPM and brutal 807 (598 lb-ft) of torque at 4600RPM. The engine is mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox. The curb weight of the car is 1519kg.
Corvette ZR1 stands 19” rims at the front and 20” at the rear fitted with 285/30 ZR19 and 335/25 Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 ultra performance tires, respectively.
The commercial explains, how the company had to reduce the power on the ZR1 to be fair to the competition – BMW, Porsche and Ferrari. Actually, they mention that the engine need to get rid of 168 bhp.

GM released their first sales figures for 2011 and it shows 721 Corvettes were delivered to new owners in January. This is 15.6% off the 854 Corvettes sold last year in January 2010. 2010: Chevrolet Corvette Jake Edition Concept is one sinister tribute. Jake has quickly become, to the Corvette Racing team, what the Cavallino Rampante is to Ferrari. That skull logo was started off as a discreet emblem back in 2005 and has since come to symbolize the team's spirit. Chevrolet is now recognizing the iconic icon with the 2011 Corvette Jake Edition Concept.
Chevy started with a Grand Sport coupe then set to work adding Jake-themed touches both inside and out. The black paint is offset nicely by the Competition Gray Z06 wheels and GT1 Championship Edition Jake-logo hood graphic. Those wheels also feature Jake center caps, as do the fenders. Moving to the interior, Jake's mug can be found on the floor mats and the console lid.
For now, the vehicle remains a concept as some of the accessories have not been put into production. However, they are planned for future release, so stay tuned, Jake fans.

The car combines the Corvette's LS3-based powertrain with unique, wide-body styling and racing-bred suspension. The model replaces the Z51 from previous model years. The car is offered in both coupe and convertible body styles, with either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. The ZR1 has the largest wheels ever of any production Corvette -- not just in diameter, but in width also. The rims measure 20 inches in rear diameter and 19 inches up front. Rear width is a whopping 12 inches, while the front wheels are nearly as massive at 10 inches of width.
In terms of wheel finish, a bright silver paint coat is standard and a chrome version is optional.
The matching Michelin Pilot Sport 2 tires measure P285/30ZR19 in front and P335/25ZR20 in the rear. While Michelin's PS2 tires are offered on many vehicles, these were engineered specifically for the ZR1, GM says.
The car's braking system features carbon-ceramic rotors measuring 15.5 inches up front and 15 inches at the rear. GM says the rotors are so durable they should not requiring replacement for the life of the vehicle.

GM has not disclosed specific performance numbers, but the company admits a top speed of 200 mph is very likely. In terms of acceleration, the ZR1 most definitely beats its Z06 counterpart, thanks to a 115-horsepower output advantage. Since the Z06 rockets to 60 mph in just 3.6 seconds, it's a safe bet the ZR1 will be much closer to the 3.0 mark.
"It all boils down to the power-to-weight ratio and the ZR1’s is exceptional," said Chevy's Ed Peper. "Better than the Porsche 911 GT2, the Ferrari 599 and even the Lamborghini LP640. In fact, the ZR1 is expected to be the first production Corvette to achieve a top speed of at least 200 mph."
Chevy Corvette accessories The C5 Chevy Corvette premiered for the 1997 model year and stayed in production until 2004.
